Constructions Stages of the Cathedral

Between the 13th and 14th centuries, a smaller Cathedral was erected, vaguely known through its brief description in a letter from the town council dated 1498, which states the need to demolish it because: “(…) it is very old, dilapidated, and at the brink of collapse; and also, because it is a small and low building that does not accommodate even half of the citizens (…)”. These circumstances compelled the town council to take the prudent and wise decision to build a new temple at the same site, called the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption (Catedral de Santa María de la Asunción). Its construction began in the 15th century until it was finally concluded in the mid-18th century.
