Jewish Quarter

Historical, cultural and spiritual testimony of the Jewish people in the City of Coria.

The historic Jewish Quarter, or “Judería”, located inside the city walls, was outlined by the current street of the Synagogue and other adjacent streets. According to the Fuero—or Charter—granted to the City of Coria in the 13th century by King Alfonso IX of León (1188-1230), this area must have been home to a large Jewish community until its expulsion was decreed by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. This occurrence was witnessed by its now-disappeared “Aljama”, which had its own synagogue and baths, whose archaeological vestiges and records have survived the test of time.
