Descent of the Alagón River

Sport, nature and adventure for those who enjoy active tourism.

A tourist attraction linked to the natural resources of the fertile Alagón Valley and included in the Fresh Water Circuit of Extremadura; this recreational activity is designed to suit all audiences. Today, it is one of the most popular attractions of adventure tourism in the region and is held on the first Sunday of August as one of the main events in the tourism programme called Agosto Turístico.

This non-competitive, medium-low difficulty challenge begins at the Macarrona Bridge in Riolobos and ends at Coria’s Iron Bridge (Puente de Hierro). It allows you to immerse yourself in nature and appreciate the stunning landscapes that mark the course of the Alagón River. On its banks, you can observe some perfectly well adapted riparian vegetation that is home to numerous species of waterfowl and waders, because of which this entire ecosystem is of great ecological and environmental value. The adrenaline-packed adventure is a journey full of thrilling experiences and spans 18.8 kilometres in which the paddlers can find countless opportunities to make occasional stops, take a dip in the water, and click great pictures to take back home as souvenirs. This active recreation in Alta Extremadura can be enjoyed once again through the Eco-friendly Descents of the Alagón Valley, an important event held from July to September, where sport and nature meet gastronomy.
