Construction Stages of the Royal Prison
The foundation of a new Prison in Coria is linked to the city’s boom owing to the development of the country between the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as the poor state of repair of the original prison in 1566. The building continued to decline over time and required several restorations, in 1645, 1662, 1667 and 1669, to prevent prisoners from escaping. These repairs, without much success, finally urged the construction of a new building, a process that was also quite complex due to the difficulties in financing the works, as the payments owed were distributed between the City of Coria and its districts.
