According to the 13th-century municipal charter, known as Fuero de Coria, it was constructed in the same place where a small chapel must have already existed in medieval times. It still preserves some vestiges from the expansion work undertaken in the 16th century to house the highly revered Romanesque-Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary. This sculpture was possibly made in the workshops of Le\u00f3n, which is housed inside the Sanctuary since 1830 and rests in its chapel from 1880, framed by a beautiful Rococo altarpiece from 1774.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"margin-bottom-50\">The 18th-century Baroque temple is marked by colonial legacies and has a single rectangular nave divided into three sections by traverse ribs covered with groin vaults. The chevet, closed by fine grillwork since 1857, is crowned by a cupola on pendentives converted on the exterior into a dome with an octagonal lantern that sits upon the rest of the gable roof.
