Durante la conquista y posterior dominaci\u00f3n romana de la pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica, la antigua capital vettona se constituy\u00f3 en <em>Castrum Caecilium Cauriensis<\/em> a partir del siglo I a.C., pasando por municipio estipendiario hasta alcanzar, durante el Bajo Imperio, la ciudadan\u00eda romana como n\u00facleo integrante de la provincia de la <em>Lusitania <\/em>perteneciente al <em>Conventus Emeritensis<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La agonizante ca\u00edda del Imperio Romano en el a\u00f1o 476, precipit\u00f3 el asentamiento de nuevos moradores procedentes de los limes del Imperio: suevos, v\u00e1ndalos, alanos y godos\u2026 lo que permiti\u00f3 que la antigua ciudad romana de <em>Caurium <\/em>se convirtiera, a partir del siglo VI d.C., en uno de los centros urbanos visigodos m\u00e1s importantes del noroeste extreme\u00f1o dotado de Sede Episcopal como atestigua la firma del prelado <em>\u201cJaquintus, episcopus cauriensis\u201d<\/em> en la Actas del III Concilio de
